Get More Out Of Google

There is a lot more to efficient Googling than you might think: in a recent study on student research skills, 3 out of 4 students couldn’t perform a “well executed search” on Google. Here are some crucial tips on refining your Googling, as well as some other great places to hunt down that infomation for your paper.

Congratulations!  Through your efforts, we raised over 1700 pounds of food for the Eastern Illinois Foodbank.

The Lady Sabers won the Sangamon Valley Conference Regular Season Championship with a victory over Clifton Central 69 to 28.  The Wallen sisters, Jade Brinkoetter and Randa Harshbarger all scored in double figures to lead the way.  Congratulations Lady Sabers.

Students, do not park your cars along the sidewalk.  Park in the designated student parking area.

January 27
Students who attended the March for Life will meet briefly after school on Friday, January 27 in room 108.  If you’d like to receive credit for your service hours, you must attend this brief meeting.  See Father Lampitt if you have any questions. 

It’s audition time. STM Theater is holding open auditions for the one act dark comedy, “The Worker” directed by Tommy Howie.  Auditions are this Friday, January 27 at 3:30pm in the band room.  Your level of theatrical experience doesn’t matter, just come out and audition.  Questions, see Tommy Howie or Mrs. Marquart. 

January 27 Deadline
Is your band getting ready?  Battle of the Bands will be held on February 10th.  Each band must be pick up a registration form from Mrs. Shuler in the Music Room.  Each band must turn in a registration form by before school on January 27th.

January 30
Estudiantes de Espanol III, IV and Spanish Mentoring:  There is a new chapter of Spanish National Honor Society at STM.  Names of academically eligible students are posted in the cafetorium on the “Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica” bulletin board.  Please check the board for more important details.  There will be a mandatory meeting for all interested, academically eligible, candidates for La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica Monday, January 30th, at 7:20am in room 103.

January 31, February 1, or February 2
It is time for STM to take the Plunge!  Student Council is once again hosting STM’s efforts to raise money for the Special Olympics in the Polar Plunge. The Plunge will take place at Lake of the Woods in Mahomet on Saturday, February 25 at noon.  Students should raise at least $75 in order to qualify for the plunge.  In order to earn 8 service hours, plungers need to attend a meeting from 3:00pm to 3:15pm in room 202 on ONE of the following days:  Tuesday, January 31, Wednesday, February 1, OR Thursday, February 2.

Global Fest: Any student interested in attending GlobalFest 2012, Saturday, March 10th at Normal West Community High School, should see Sra. Stewart in Room 103.  Sra. Stewart and Srta. Race and a group of STM students will take a bus to GlobalFest where they will celebrate cultures and languages of the world, as well as lead activities and meet students from all over the state of Illinois and our world.  Don’t miss out on this great trip.  Hispanic culture points are available.  Cost is $25 which covers the all day registration and a great authentic Mexican dinner in Bloomington.

Empty Bowl is quickly approaching.  If you would like to perform at the Empty Bowl Supper, please sign up outside the Art Studio or the Music Room.  We would enjoy any type of performance from singing and dancing to poetry reading. Remember to sign up before February 10th.

February 16 and 17
Adult volunteers are needed to help staff concession stands at the Assembly Hall the afternoon of Thursday, February 16 and during the day Friday, February 17.  Volunteer earnings can be allocated towards a students tuition, a sport, prom, a class, an STM sponsored trip, etc.  Please contact Mrs. Oliveira at doliveira@hs-stm.org or by calling 352-7210 if you are available or if there are questions.

Academic Labs for Student Assistance We are excited to announce each department will provide academic labs for student assistance opportunities. These labs allow students to meet with a faculty member in an academic area. Click here for information and scheduling.

STM Fall Sports Teams Receive Academic Achievement Award

The IHSA recently announced that all eight fall sports teams at The High School of Saint Thomas More received the IHSA Team Academic Achievement Award. This award is given to teams achieving a 3.0 GPA in classroom work while simultaneously participating in interscholastic athletics/activities. Teams honored are Cheerleading, Cross Country, Football, Golf/Boys, Golf/Girls, Soccer/Boys, Tennis/Girls and Volleyball. Congratulations to our STM student athletes!

Pat Hettermann Named Girls’ Golf Coach Of the Year!

STM Athletic Director Dan Hennessey announced the NFHS Coaches Association has selected Pat Hettermann as the 2011 Coach of the Year at the state level in the sport of Girls Golf. The NFHS Coaches Association is the official national coaches association of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The NFHS recognizes coaches at the state, sectional, and national level. Coach Hettermann has coached the Girls Golf team at The High School of Saint Thomas More since the team was formed in 2003. Each year since then, either an individual player, the team, or both, have advanced to Sectional play. Since 2006, the STM Girls Golf team has been among the top 4 teams in the State Finals, bringing home the State title in 2010. Two golfers coached by Pat Hettermann signed to play Division I golf; Katie Jean signed with Illinois State University in 2008 and Sierra Myerscough signed with Northern Illinois University in the fall.

Boys Basketball Date Changes

The JV/VAR boys basketball game vs Fisher scheduled for Tues., 2/7, has been changed to Wed., 2/8, due to STM hosting the Class 2A Girls Basketball Regional.  The FR boys basketball game vs SJO scheduled for 2/6 has been changed to Wed., 2/1, 6:00p at STM.  The FR boys basketball game scheduled for Thurs., 2/9 will be an ‘away’ game at St. Teresa.

STM Cheerleaders performing in the 2012 Capital One Bowl, Orlando

Memphis, TN - (Dec. 22) Local cheerleaders from The High School of Saint Thomas More in Champaign will be performing in the 2012 Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Florida.  The cheerleaders earned this distinction and qualified to perform at the Capitol One pre-game show based on First Place finishes during Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), summer camps.

The STM cheer squad, led by captains Taylor Ehler and Zoe Kaler, has worked for several months to raise funds for the trip. Their current effort is a 2012 calendar featuring the squad performing stunts, jumps and cheers (see attached sample pages).
