Who: Girls in grades 6-8
STM Varsity Cheerleaders will instruct girls in stunting and pyramids for your team squad. Participants should be in grades 6-8th or entering 6th grade.

- STM Fall Sports Teams Receive Academic Achievement Award

The IHSA recently announced that all eight fall sports teams at The High School of Saint Thomas More received the IHSA Team Academic Achievement Award. This award is given to teams achieving a 3.0 GPA in classroom work while simultaneously participating in interscholastic athletics/activities. Teams honored are Cheerleading, Cross Country, Football, Golf/Boys, Golf/Girls, Soccer/Boys, Tennis/Girls and Volleyball. Congratulations to our STM student athletes!

- Pat Hettermann Named Girls’ Golf Coach Of the Year!

STM Athletic Director Dan Hennessey announced the NFHS Coaches Association has selected Pat Hettermann as the 2011 Coach of the Year at the state level in the sport of Girls Golf. The NFHS Coaches Association is the official national coaches association of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The NFHS recognizes coaches at the state, sectional, and national level. Coach Hettermann has coached the Girls Golf team at The High School of Saint Thomas More since the team was formed in 2003. Each year since then, either an individual player, the team, or both, have advanced to Sectional play. Since 2006, the STM Girls Golf team has been among the top 4 teams in the State Finals, bringing home the State title in 2010. Two golfers coached by Pat Hettermann signed to play Division I golf; Katie Jean signed with Illinois State University in 2008 and Sierra Myerscough signed with Northern Illinois University in the fall.

- Using Our Claws for the Cause - Breast Cancer Night at STM

Saber Pack will be selling Breast Cancer Cure t-shirts this week at lunch. Shirts are $12 with $4 benefiting the Mills Breast Cancer. Any student that purchases a t-shirt can wear it to school on Friday, January 20th with jeans. During the Friday, January 20th Boys Basketball team Fighting Cancer Night, the Saber Pack will be walking around with donation buckets, and games will be played at half time. All proceeds from the evenings events will benefit the Mills Breast Cancer center. No skinny, tight, or jeans with holes will be allowed. Click here to download and print the t-shirt order form.

- Boys Basketball Date Changes

The JV/VAR boys basketball game vs Fisher scheduled for Tues., 2/7, has been changed to Wed., 2/8, due to STM hosting the Class 2A Girls Basketball Regional. The FR boys basketball game vs SJO scheduled for 2/6 has been changed to Wed., 2/1, 6:00p at STM. The FR boys basketball game scheduled for Thurs., 2/9 will be an ‘away’ game at St. Teresa.

- Sabers Capture Title at Holiday Hoopla

The varsity boys basketball team took 1st Place at the Monticello Holiday Hoopla over Christmas break by defeating Sangamon Valley, Tuscola, and Ridgeview in pool play. The Sabers defeated Mt. Zion in the title game. Congratulations Sabers!

- STM Cheerleaders performing in the 2012 Capital One Bowl, Orlando

Memphis, TN - (Dec. 22) Local cheerleaders from The High School of Saint Thomas More in Champaign will be performing in the 2012 Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The cheerleaders earned this distinction and qualified to perform at the Capitol One pre-game show based on First Place finishes during Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), summer camps.
The STM cheer squad, led by captains Taylor Ehler and Zoe Kaler, has worked for several months to raise funds for the trip. Their current effort is a 2012 calendar featuring the squad performing stunts, jumps and cheers (see attached sample pages).

Plan to join them at halftime of the varsity game (8:15pm) on Friday, January 6th and support your favorite STM Varsity Basketball Letterman as he laces up his sneakers and takes the court. - Santa, Sammy and the Saber Pack wish the Lady Raiders “Good Luck”!

Santa and Sammy the Saber along with Saber Pack Leaders Ally Heffernan, Anna Sikorski and CJ Young surprised the Lady Raiders at the St. Matthew’s Pep Assembly on Friday, December 9th. The Lady Raiders 8th Grade Girls’ Basketball Team advanced to the State semi-finals playing Roanoke Benson this Saturday, 12/10 at 11:30am at Monticello Jr. High. If the girls win, they advance to the State Final Four playing at 5pm. Santa, Sammy, the Saber Pack and the entire STM community, want to give a “shout out” to the Lady Raiders. Congratulations and Good Luck! GO RAIDERS!!

- Shoot Out at the Hall - Site/Time Change

Shoot Out at the Hall: Due to NCAA Rules, the Shoot Out at the Hall event has been moved from Assembly Hall on the U of I campus to Parkland College, Champaign, on Saturday, December 10. The Sabers will tipoff at 3:45pm against cross-town rival Urbana. Admission is $12 for everyone. Join the Sabers at Parkland College for an exciting Shoot Out this Saturday!

- Saber TAILGREAT: In the Zone

STM Fans were “in the zone” as they were greeted by returning alumni letter winners and the STM Pep Band at the Athletic Boosters Annual Dinner-Dance, Saber TAILGREAT. This annual fundraiser hosted by the Athletic Boosters on Friday night raised over $25,000 for the STM athletic program. Saber Fans warmed up with great game day “eats”, and their competitive edge took over during the challenging “trivia” game. STM generosity was evident during the live auction as our Saber Fans went the distance in support of our student athletes. Many thanks to our alumni and alumni parents for returning to support the Sabers. A “shout out” to our evening emcee Todd Powell and Trivia Game host Kevin Hinders. It was a great night to be a Saber!

- Volleyball Advances to Sectional Championship

STM Volleyball has advanced to the IHSA Sectional Championship game after defeating Pana HS 2-1. They will play on Thursday, November 3, 7:00pm against St. Teresa at Monticello HS. Admission is $5.00/person.

- Girls’ Welle and Boys Cross Country Team Finish Strong at State Meet

Congratulations to Theresa Welle for finishing 37th out of 206 runners at the Class 1A IHSA Girls Cross Country State Finals held in Peoria on Saturday. Congratulations also to the Boys Cross Country team for capturing 4th place out of 25 teams in the Boys State Final. Nick Hess led the Sabers with All-State Honors, finishing in the top 25, in 19th place overall with a time of 15:28! Way to go Sabers!!!

- STM Baseball Field Service Hour Project

Mark your calendar for 8:30 AM on Sunday, October 30th. Earn those extra service hours that you need. Assuming the weather holds, we will complete the infield sod. If you have time, stop out and look at the new outfield....impressive. We are working on the infield red dawg surface and fencing the next two weeks. See Mrs. Joop is you need to get the service hour paperwork started and to sign for the hours that you have all ready put in.

- Girls’ Tennis, Baillon, Reaches Top 32 at State Final

Madie Baillon finished 2-1 at the State tournament and placed among the top 32 players in the entire State of Illinois, finishing her season with a singles record of 22-3. Congratulations to Madie on another great year.

We just received a new shipment of Nike gear, and we now have cold weather and wind gear including stocking hats, zip up and pull over jackets in all sizes!! We will also be selling these great items out of the indoor concession stands during volleyball and basketball games and watch for pictures and ordering information coming soon to the school website.
