This essay will count as the second half of your Short Story Test. You will be looking in-depth at one of the stories we read in class. You may choose from:
“The Interlopers”(p. 8)
“Two Friends”(p. 546)
“Harrison Bergeron” (p. 20)
“By the Waters of Babylon” (p. 43)

You must have a complete rough draft—this means an introduction, conclusion, and body paragraphs. The rough draft is worth 50 points. If you do not have a rough draft on the day it is due, you will earn 0 points. However, I will not grade your essay unless you hand in a rough draft and your final draft shows substantial revision of your rough draft.

Essay topic:

Using one of the short stories we covered in class, write an explication of one main character, the central conflict of the story, and a complete discussion of the central theme of the story. You must use quotes to support your points.

If you type your rough draft, please send it to yourself through email so that you can work on it in class.

Communication Apprehension Speech

Due Monday, Spetember 20

Time Limits: None
Speaking notes: 25 – 50 words for the interview report.
Sources named: The person or persons interviewed.
Outline of speech: Prepare a 75 – 100 word outline.
Audience: a group of friends who will understand.

Order of the speech:
-A story of someone’s experience of stage fright. If you have heard a funny story from one of your interviewees, or have one of your own, plan to open the speech with that.
-Tell about the people you interviewed and their experiences and advice about dealing with communication apprehension.
-Describe each interview separately, but after the description, draw some common conclusions about them.
-Tell about your own anticipation of speaking anxiety, and about the one or two suggestions you tried before presenting the speech.
-Conclude the speech with a reference back to your opening story, perhaps imagining how one of the suggestions you tried could have changed the outcome of the opening story.

You may also write examples in your own words, but make sure you have page numbers. This will help you when you have to write an essay. You should have at least 3 examples for each concept/theme.
•Write a ½ page reflection about the story. You may write this in any form, but I will expect your feelings about the events in the story. I won’t be satisfied with “I loved it.” Give me as much info as possible into why you loved it.
